Old Anglo Saxon name appears on Norman Shield! Great Waltham Art Show saw not only the largest numbers of shields made in one day (That's 15) but also the most ornate one to date. Many thanks to Mr Ben Poulton who sat down with his daughter and drew this, his family coat of arms. Recorded as Poltune in the Domesday Book in 1086 this is an Anglo Saxon name dating as far back as 700. It means 'settlement by a pool' ('tun' being a farm or settlement and 'pol' meaning pool). It appears to have been used countrywide from Kent to Gloucestershire. Great one Mr Poulton!
Thanks also to Malcolm and all the team behind the Art Show. If you didn't come you missed homemade cakes and tea as well as loads of art on show. Thanks especially to Rebecca who was able to show me the amazing Monet inspired bridge she made especially for the event. Keep an eye on the events page for even more Amiere events coming soon.
